The Metrodome |
The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodom- e, which opened in 1982, is financia- lly
self-supporting. It is the only pub- lic stadium in the country that does not rely on a continuing tax
subsidy to finance operations, maintenance or debt payments.
The Metrodome is owned and opera- ted by the Metropolitan Sports Faci- lities Commission (MSFC), but is home
to the Minnesota Golden Gop- her football and baseball teams, the National Football League’s Minneso- ta Vikings
and Major League Baseb- all’s Minnesota Twins. |

""Goldy"" The Minnesota Gopher |
On the field this giant, furry creatu- re musters cheers for the home team and
jeers for the rival players. No antic is too silly for Goldy Gopher in fulfilling these tasks.
"Goldy is just a funny looking char- acter to begin with," says John Hart, who coordinates Goldy's public
appe- arances at the U's Spirit Squad offic- e. "Goldy's mischievous and always looking to make people laugh.
I've been at away football games in Iowa, where obviously everybody hates Minnesota, and Goldy can turn
arou- nd and make those same fans yelling swear words, laugh." Goldy makes about 1,000 appearances a year
and is at virtually all home games for spectator sports. |
